“We’ve heard a lot from developers who had no choice but to get a Windows PC from their employer, but then had to do artificial intelligence or machine learning. With Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), this is much easier,” said Jon Seager, Vice President of Engineering at Canonical. What he means is that developers download Ubuntu to their Windows computers and then run it through the WSL subsystem.

WSL allows you to set up a Linux environment inside Windows and interact with it through a terminal, while Windows remains the primary operating system on your computer.

Previously, programmers had to install both Windows and Linux, but some find WSL easier to manage. According to Seeger, employees leave Windows on their computers (usually because of employer demand) and use WSL to run Ubuntu when Linux is needed. And this method may eventually surpass Ubuntu installations in popularity. Seeger believes that there will be more users of Ubuntu WSL than native Ubuntu users in the future.
