Spector said he had considered retiring in the past but later changed his mind. This time the developers were more serious: “Will I come back? Never say never. But I guess it’s time to ride off into the sunset.”.

“I’ve had a great career. I wouldn’t change anything if I could.<...>I’ve worked at big companies and I’ve worked at startups, and I think I’ve helped a lot of really talented people do their jobs (which is the most important thing).”Specter said.

In nearly 44 years in the industry, Spector has been responsible for 17 full games (and about nine additional games), many of which have had far greater impact than the developers or anyone else expected.

Spector is also known for his work on the Thief, TRON, Wing Commander and Epic Mickey series. Until recently, developer-led OtherSide Entertainment released the unsuccessful stealth action game Thick as Thieves in 2026.

“That’s all behind me now, and with age and health reminding me more and more often, I feel like I’ve accomplished everything I set out to do. It’s time to write a book, read a lot, give lectures, and maybe do some consulting.”,” Spector said.

Specter lamented that the game development business had changed and no longer pleased him as it once did. At the same time, experts still wanted to make three games – very big, very small and unimaginable.
