Foldable smartphones are no longer niche devices – the widescreen Galaxy Z Fold8 is proving so popular that it could change Samsung’s entire approach to gadgets across the category. The company plans to succeed with wider foldable smartphones, promising ET News.

There is still very little information about this new device – only that it will be released in 2027 and will not have the same 4:3 aspect ratio as the current Galaxy Z Fold8. The Korean version reported that Samsung strives to “Create a screen aspect ratio suitable for video viewing”. We have to assume we’re talking about a 16:9 or 16:10 option, although this isn’t specified.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 has been well received – with one exception: black bars appear on the sides when viewing most video content. A new, wider format could solve this problem. According to ETNews, Samsung will launch five foldable devices in 2027, including the Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, the direct successor to the Z Flip8, and the updated Galaxy Z TriFold. The company discontinued the latter, apparently because of its hefty $2,900 price tag.
The Samsung Unpacked 2027 presentation may only take place in July next year. Before that, Apple will release its first foldable iPhone, which can adjust the market and technical aspects of foldable devices.
