AMD released the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 processor in April this year, priced at US$899. This 16-core Zen 5 chip has additional 3D V cache on both CCD units. Therefore, its total cache memory is 208 MB. This chip is automatically overclocked to 5.6 GHz and has a nominal TDP of 200 W.
Removing the processor’s factory thermal cover automatically voids the user’s warranty on the chip. The process is risky and may cause irreversible damage to the processor. Therefore, Thermal Grizzly offers its own warranty on processors that undergo this process. Therefore, the price of this offer is high. Each such chip is verified after scalping. Thermal Grizzly includes a flash memory drive that contains screenshots of temperature and test results as well as microscope images of crystals.
The kit also includes the original processor heat sink cap. However, Thermal Grizzly warns users not to reuse it. According to the company, the thermal interface cannot fully compensate for the height difference between the processor die and the original cover after removal. Reusing the cover may damage the processor and void Thermal Grizzly’s warranty.
The scalped Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is also not compatible with AMD Direct Die Frames. Thermal Grizzly recommends using its own custom cooling product that contacts the CPU crystal directly, or using a special replacement cover from Conductonaut Liquid Metal. The company also warns that exposed SMD components should be insulated when using liquid metal.
