The global digital camera market has grown significantly in 2025, and the balance of power among Japan’s largest manufacturers has changed. According to the latest “Nikkei Industry Map 2027” report, Canon has not only retained its No. 1 position in the digital camera market, but its lead over competitors has also been significantly improved. At the same time, Fuji Film replaced Nikon and entered the top three for the first time.
According to Nikkei, total digital camera sales will increase to 9.5 million units by 2025 from 8.7 million units a year ago. Against this background, Canon’s global market share increased from 43.2% to 45.7%. The company’s full-year camera sales increased from 3.53 units to 4.5 million units.
Sony again finished in second place. The Japanese company sold 2.42 million cameras, compared with 2.33 million units in the same period last year, but its market share fell to 24.6% from 28.5%. The gap between Canon and Sony becomes even more apparent.
The main surprise is the reshuffle of third place. Fujifilm’s camera sales increased from 740,000 units to 1.16 million units, and its market share increased from 9% to 11.8%. As a result, the company overtook Nikon, which ranked third a year ago. Nikon’s sales volume in 2025 will decrease by approximately 80,000 units to 880,000 units, and its market share will drop from 11.7% to 8.9%. As a result, the manufacturer ended up in fourth place.
Fujifilm’s growth has been driven by strong demand for its many models. In particular, the company continues to struggle to secure adequate supply of the X100VI, with the X-M5 and X-E5 models also experiencing supply shortages and delays. Nikkei’s statistics presumably also include Fujifilm’s Instax series of digital cameras, including the Instax Wide Evo.
Panasonic ranks fifth in the global digital camera market with approximately 430,000 cameras, with a market share of 4.4%. The company’s supply increased by approximately 150,000 devices.
Ricoh Imaging demonstrates even more impressive dynamics. The manufacturer’s ranking rose from seventh to sixth, with camera supply increasing to 210,000 units. Ricoh’s market share increased from 0.8% to 2.1%, and sales approximately tripled. This must be due to the popularity of the GR IV compact camera.
At the bottom of the list is OM System, which supplied about 150,000 cameras, compared with 160,000 cameras in the same period last year. The company fell from sixth to seventh place.
However, Nikkei’s statistics only cover Japanese listed companies and do not include manufacturers such as Leica and Hasselblad. Additionally, the data does not reflect Sigma camera sales as the company is not publicly traded. Therefore, the indicators given should not be considered complete data for the entire global market.
However, the results show that the digital camera market continues to recover after years of decline. The most significant change in the market structure is the strengthening position of Canon and Fujifilm, while the shares of Sony and Nikon are declining.
