The sci-fi epic “Exodus”, considered by many fans to be the spiritual successor to the classic “Mass Effect” series, has now taken shape. In the build-up to Gamescom 2026, developer Archetype Entertainment and publisher Wizards of the Coast have revealed the exact release date. The action RPG, produced by many well-known veterans of former BioWare projects, will launch globally on April 7, 2027 on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Along with announcing the release date, the developers also showed off an extensive gameplay and story trailer, providing a deeper look into the game’s complex mechanics and emotional storyline. The center of the story is the protagonist Jun Aslan and the so-called Travelers Guild.
These brave souls travel across the vastness of space to restore ancient technology from higher species and ensure the survival of humanity. The biggest challenge, however, is not only the harsh environment but also the physics of time dilation: while the protagonists are only days or weeks into their mission, decades have passed in their hometown. This time travel element directly impacts gameplay and narrative decisions. When players return from a trip, they often find that their familiar home has completely changed. Decisions made before a mission can have repercussions for generations.
A multi-layered peer system complements the emotional impact of the plot, in which dynamic relationships, complex dialogue and even romantic choices play a central role. The morality system is also very reminiscent of the great examples of the genre, but leaves the player with significantly more room for gray areas. In addition to the participation of Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey, who plays a key role in the story, the film also impresses with its spectacular visual presentation based on Unreal Engine 5.
Archetype Entertainment, founded by studio head James Ohlen, will use the remaining development time until spring 2027 to focus exclusively on fine-tuning. After narrowing down the date range, Exodus is already considered one of the most ambitious and promising role-playing heavyweights to come out in the coming years.
