These metrics provide insight into how Microsoft is using artificial intelligence as it competes with rivals like Meta✴Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. The software giant is spending hundreds of billions of dollars building AI infrastructure and encouraging employees to incorporate AI tools into their daily work. The actual use of these tools varies greatly and can range in price from a few dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. This shows that heavy use of artificial intelligence at work is not associated with increased pay, bonuses, and promotions. Large companies are increasingly tracking the amount of artificial intelligence resources consumed by their employees.

This year, they added a new column to the overall transparency table and asked employees to self-report their AI usage in dollars each month, and more specifically within the past 28 days. For this purpose, Microsoft provides a dedicated internal tool, which is still in beta. Business Insider obtained a document containing 600 entries from Microsoft employees, 350 of which filled out fields related to the use of artificial intelligence. The median for 28 days is $300; an employee in Microsoft’s Customer and Partner Solutions group said the maximum was $28,000. This data is not official, provided voluntarily and may contain errors. The company had 223,000 employees as of June 30, so a sample of 350 employees doesn’t represent the full picture.
