Ubisoft is taking its traditional franchise brands into new genre territory. At Opening Night Live 2026, the publisher officially announced Rainbow Six: Rainbow Six. This spin-off abandons the classic first-person shooter gameplay and instead relies on the turn-based tactical experience of games like XCOM. The focus is entirely on a pure single-player experience, putting well-known characters from the Rainbow Six universe into new strategic horizons.
The first trailer gives a direct look at the tactics game’s gameplay. Players command a team of special forces, including popular operators from Rainbow Six: Siege.
In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Tactics, produced by Ubisoft Paris, you take on the role of Commander Six for the first time and control the Rainbow Force through a global campaign. The game parallels the story of Rainbow Six Siege and relies on strategic management and campaign gameplay loops: at headquarters, you assess intelligence information, expand your base and prepare missions, before sending your team into battle.
On site, combat switches to a turn-based tactical view, where you command a squad of four from 15 well-known siege operators. Through a unique combination of special abilities, personal talent trees, gadgets, and destructible environments, you can complete a variety of missions, such as rescuing hostages or defusing bombs.
The game is developed by an experienced team within the Ubisoft Studios network and is designed to specifically cater to fans with demanding single-player tactics. In addition to a comprehensive story campaign that delves into the Special Forces background, the developers are also promising replayable missions and procedurally generated scenarios for long-term challenges.
The announcement marks an exciting shake-up for the brand, which has been characterized by its success in multiplayer gaming in recent years. Rainbow Six: Tactics is scheduled to be released in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Visitors to Gamescom in Cologne will have the opportunity to view the first gameplay demo at Ubisoft’s booth over the next few days at the show.
