Ubisoft officially announced a full remake of “Heroes of Might and Magic III” at Gamescom. More than two decades after its original release, the publisher is giving new luster to the masterpiece that has been praised by fans and critics alike. The new version is no longer limited to pure HD sharpening of old textures, but recreates classics from the ground up based on modern graphics engines. Ubisoft hopes to attract nostalgic veterans of the series as well as a whole new generation of strategy fans to PC and current consoles.
At the heart of the remaster is a complete visual overhaul. All units, hero portraits, battle maps, and iconic world maps are drawn from scratch and designed with high-resolution 3D models and detailed animations. The unmistakable charm of the original should be retained intact, while spectacular magical effects and dynamic lighting ambiences present the event in a contemporary way.
The developers have also tweaked the gameplay in all the right places to significantly modernize the flow of the game. You can look forward to a completely redesigned and intuitive user interface that makes micromanaging your cities and armies even easier. The package is also complemented by comprehensive quality-of-life improvements, such as accelerated AI turns, an auto-save feature, and an expanded post-war statistics overview.
All known factions, heroes, and units from the base game and expansion packs are available to the strategist. You can plunge back into the epic story campaign to decide the fate of Erathia, or engage in hour-long battles on randomly generated maps.
The multiplayer mode has also been radically upgraded: thanks to modern network effects, matchmaking systems and comprehensive cross-play, you can now compete against each other in cross-platform turn-based online battles. Even the popular single-screen hot seat mode is still available for classic game nights.
The remastered version of Heroes of Might and Magic III is currently planned to be released on PC and existing consoles. Ubisoft promises to reveal more details about the beta phase, specific content, and target release date in the coming months.
