Paradox Interactive has announced Afterworld, a new strategy game in the survival grand strategy genre that is unrelated to the company’s existing franchises. In terms of atmosphere, the project is reminiscent of Fallout: the story takes place in a devastated North America, where the survivors must rebuild civilization among wastelands, bandits, cultists, and mysterious ancients.
Players will control a tribe of survivors, starting with a small settlement and gradually turning it into a full-fledged force. You need to acquire food, water and fuel, develop new territories, create supply chains, form alliances and wage war. If necessary, entire settlements can be relocated to more habitable areas.
One of the key features is the procedurally generated world. The geography of North America will remain identifiable, but the location of resources, tribes, and threats will change with each playthrough. Tech development is also unusual: a dynamic thought tree unlocks new technologies based on what the player explores and encounters.
At the beginning of the article, you’ll be able to choose your team’s backstory – for example, survivors from a doomed shelter or religious fanatics in search of a goddess. The development of society will then depend on the player’s decisions: you can engage in diplomacy, rob caravans, expand territory through force, or gradually unite different tribes into a new empire.
A release date for Afterworld has not yet been announced. You shouldn’t expect a release before early 2027.
