Samsung showcased its new P series of external solid-state drives at the Gamescom 2026 exhibition in Cologne, Germany. Samsung P9 and P7 models feature USB4 ports and are available in capacities up to 8 TB, with the older P9 offering sequential read speeds of up to 4000 MB/s.

Thanks to the USB4 Gen 3×2 interface (40 Gbps), the flagship Samsung P9 has a sequential read speed of 4000 MB/s and a write speed of 3800 MB/s. That’s roughly twice the performance of previous-generation SSDs: For example, the 4TB Samsung T9 with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface offers read and write speeds of up to 2000 MB/s.
Samsung positions the P9 as a driver for professional video processing. High sustained write speeds let you record up to 12K resolution video directly to SSD, and you can use the drive to store and edit large RAW files and ultra-high-resolution videos. After exhausting the intelligent TurboWrite cache, sustained sequential write speeds are 2000 MB/sec for the 2 TB version and 1000 MB/sec for the 1 TB model.
A special place in the line is the P9 version with a capacity of 8 TB: Samsung claims it is the world’s first portable SSD with a USB4 interface of this capacity, capable of transferring data at speeds of up to 4000 MB/s. The P9 previously won a CES 2026 Innovation Award.
The second new product is the Samsung P7, a more feature-rich external SSD. It also has a USB4 port and is designed to work with a variety of devices, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, game consoles, and cameras. The drive has been tested to withstand drops from a height of two meters, as well as resistance to shock and vibration.
Both drives support 256-bit AES hardware encryption and Samsung Magician software. Their dimensions are 90 × 65 × 8.3 mm and weight – 96 grams for the P9 and 98 grams for the P7. The manufacturer offers a five-year limited warranty.
The Samsung P9 and P7 are available in capacities of 1, 2, 4 and 8 TB respectively and will go on sale globally on August 31st. The suggested prices for the P9 are $339.99, $649.99, $1349.99, and $2699.99. The Samsung P7 sells for $289.99, $549.99, $1149.99, and $2289.99, depending on capacity.
