Following the reveal of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s next major story expansion, Song of the Past, CD Projekt Red and partner studio Fool’s Theory have provided more information about the new game world’s locations. The expansion transports the wizard Geralt to the region of Latvia, home to his long-time companion Dandelion. Since the location barely showed up on previous maps of The Witcher universe, the developers have now explained in detail where the new area should be located on the world map. The location also provides an interesting bridge to upcoming events in The Witcher 4.
As Fool Theory World Director Peter Gelencser pointed out, the Latvian region is located north of Redania. Geographically, the region is approximately halfway between the Kingdom of Kovir and the Kaedwen region, more specifically on the south bank of the Nimnar River. This puts Leten relatively close to Blaviken, the town where Geralt gained the infamous nickname “The Butcher of Blaviken”.
Therefore, this location is further north than the previous Velen or Novigrad locations in the main game. Developers describe Latvia as an idyllic, rural area that at first glance seems untouched by the continent’s wars and other upheavals. However, beneath this picturesque surface lies a dark curse, which Geralt must uncover as the story progresses.
Due to its proximity to Kovir, the area also provides a bridge to the released The Witcher 4 and Project Polaris. It’s no secret that the next major chapter in the main series will be set in this northern kingdom.
In terms of content, the expansion builds on the base game and, according to the developers, aims to tell a standalone story in the style of classic Witcher quests. The Latvian region is designed as a fully developed open world that offers you numerous side quests and new characters in addition to the main quest.
