Nvidia DLSS 5: First test of leaked DLSS 5 mod draws sharp criticism

The debate over the future of AI-powered graphics technology is entering its next round. After modders were able to extract Nvidia DLSS 5’s unreleased libraries from NBA 2K27’s archives, developers and enthusiasts tested the new “Neural Rendering” feature in games like Control. However, the first results caused a lot of discussion in the PC gaming community: in addition to distorted character models, testers specifically complained about a drastic drop in frame rates.

Compared with previous iterations of DLSS that relied primarily on scaling and image generation to improve performance, DLSS 5 uses neural rendering to deeply intervene in visual representation. Preliminary tests show that artificial intelligence uses generative models to completely reinterpret surfaces, lighting and faces on the fly.

But it was this dynamic that annoyed many observers: when used in Control or Final Fantasy VII Reborn, character faces would sometimes be severely distorted or appear unnatural, prompting accusations that the technology distorted the development team’s original vision.

In addition to being visually alienating, the performance hunger of the previous beta version was particularly disappointing. DLSS is actually supposed to ensure a smoother gaming experience, but users report performance drops of up to 50% when AI rendering mode is enabled – even on high-end graphics cards. This means that the technology’s original purpose is currently being reversed in unofficial scenarios.

However, Nvidia and supporting developers strongly defend the concept. The studio stressed that the leaked files are unfinished, unofficial beta versions of the app. Through official integration, art teams have complete control over the intensity and color of AI filters, thereby retaining original artistic intent and avoiding glitches.

The final coordinated release will have to prove whether Nvidia can iron out the kinks and optimize the huge performance costs before the official launch.
