OpenAI purchased tens of thousands of Mac minis and Mac Studio to use AI

OpenAI has significantly increased its purchases of Apple computers to perform tasks related to artificial intelligence. According to The Information, the company has purchased tens of thousands of Mac minis and Mac Studio units in recent months, and Anthropic leases similar devices through Amazon AWS.

The main advantage of Apple computers for such tasks is considered unified memory, which allows the processor and GPU to access a common array of data. Also of interest is the low-latency connection between Thunderbolt 5 and the device, which makes it easy for Mac mini and Mac Studio to set up clusters and run proxy systems. OpenAI expects to use the purchased hardware for reinforcement learning and agent-based workloads.

Against this background, the demand for other relatively compact artificial intelligence systems is growing. It was previously reported that Asus and MSI had actually sold out of the first batch of devices equipped with NVIDIA RTX Spark before the platform was officially launched, and had requested additional supplies from NVIDIA. It seems that artificial intelligence companies are ready to adopt almost any hardware that can provide enough computing power.

With Apple’s recent product lineup updates, demand is likely to increase further. The company launched the M6 Mac mini and M5 Ultra Mac Studio, which also have a niche in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Against this backdrop, the average buyer can only watch what is happening: Memory shortages and increasing demands from artificial intelligence companies continue to make high-performance computers increasingly unaffordable.
