Neverness and Everness suspected of killing Alienware gaming laptops

Experts at the Parts-People service center discovered the same hardware glitch in two Dell Alienware gaming laptops (models m17 R4 and m15 R3), which failed after a few days of playing the open-world anime action game Neverness to Everness.

In both cases, the device completely stops turning on and responding to the power button. Diagnostics revealed severe corruption of the firmware of the embedded controller (embedded controller/EC chip), the microcircuit responsible for power distribution, thermal control and activation of key components of the circuit board. The functionality of the motherboard can only be restored after desoldering and hardware reprogramming of the chip using a programmer.

In addition to the EC chip failure, the display line/matrix of the Alienware m17 R4 also stopped functioning (the laptop only displayed images on the test screen), while the m15 R3 functioned normally after flashing. The service guru himself stated that the crash triggers could be severe overheating during heavy gaming on Unreal Engine 5 and sudden voltage surges during peak loads.

Users online have pointed out anti-cheating efforts at the core of Neverness to Everness. When an anti-cheat system’s low-level driver conflicts with a proprietary laptop power management service, it can cause a fatal failure in controller data writing operations. This version has not yet been confirmed.
