Capcom is making its proprietary RE engine available to third-party students for the first time, a rare move for the gaming industry. Osaka Electric and Communications University announced the launch of a two-week special education program created in direct collaboration with the publisher.
Professional developers from Capcom’s headquarters in Osaka take classes in person and review student projects created using the RE engine. The practical course is aimed at students in professional fields such as digital game design and media technology in the School of Computer Science and Art, as well as students with a master’s degree in game development.
A move like this gives Capcom the opportunity to train future talent directly from their student days, allowing them to build their own in-house engine architecture, bypassing the lengthy process of retraining using Unreal Engine or Unity.
