Tim Kane continues to share his experience working in game development: it does not guarantee your financial and career security at all

Tim Cain, the co-writer of the original Fallout, recorded a video in which he spoke out about the permanent instability of the video game industry. According to him, those who have been engaged in game development for the past 5-10 years and hope to have a peaceful 30-year career are initially wrong.

Kane reflects on his own experiences with the market crash of 1983, the transition from 2D to 3D in the 1990s, the demise of mid-sized studios in the 2010s, and the current post-pandemic bubble recession.

Developers believe that the main sources of eternal unrest are changing human artistic tastes and the continuous development of technology, while the current pressure of generative artificial intelligence and mass layoffs will only exacerbate an already difficult situation. However, Kane advises young experts to either master an extremely rare and irreplaceable skill (such as highly specialized shader work) or be prepared to change their area of activity at the right time, as you shouldn’t expect the game development process to be easy.
