The Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation announced the launch of the fifth generation (5G) commercial communication network in Russia. In the first phase, the service will be provided in 16 cities by the four major operators (MTS, Beeline, MegaFon and T2).

In Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg, all four major operators have launched 5G networks, in Novosibirsk and Kazan – MegaFon and MTS, in Samara – Beeline and MegaFon, in Veliky Novgorod, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod and Tver – MegaFon. T2 started offering 5G-based services in Volgograd, Krasnoyarsk, Perm and Chelyabinsk, Ufa – MTS and Yaroslavl – Beeline. “In the near future, owners of all Android platform devices will be able to use these services in these cities. Whether iPhone users can use 5G depends on Apple’s decision.” – Clarification from the Ministry of Digital Development.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said it is now working to roll out the technology in 50 more cities by the end of this year, and clarified that in the first phase, 5G will operate on LTE frequencies previously allocated to operators. This will increase network capacity by 20-25% over the next few years.
In addition, operators have previously allocated an equal amount of new frequency bands in the 4.63-4.99 GHz range for free. This makes it possible to maintain a high level of competition among them and ensure affordable tariffs, the ministry noted, emphasizing that the introduction of new generation networks will not only help increase the speed of mobile networks. Utilizing 5G networks to digitize industrial enterprises; control of driverless vehicles and robotic systems; development of telemedicine; operation of smart city systems; connecting sensors, meters and other IoT devices, and creating dedicated technology networks in industrial facilities.
“Today, everyone needs fast mobile Internet anytime, anywhere. Fourth-generation mobile networks have covered 90% of our country’s residential areas, and 95% of mobile users use LTE services every day… Fifth-generation networks provide significantly faster speeds for mobile services, which is especially important for advanced urban users.” The Ministry of Digital Development quoted the head of the department, Maksut Shadayev.
