Google has launched the Early Access program on the Play Store to allow developers to release applications during the development, testing and feedback stages. Antivirus developers warn this is an ideal environment for malware to spread bitguard.

In the absence of public ratings and reviews, unscrupulous developers can flood the app ecosystem with fraudulent services, fake casinos, and malware masquerading as legitimate. When searching for an app in the regular Play Store section, the first thing users see is its star rating, and reviews from other users can help them quickly decide whether the app is worth downloading. Ratings and reviews may be fake, but users still have the opportunity to check the reliability of the product. In early access systems, users who fall victim to scammers are deprived of the opportunity to warn others about the danger.

To make matters worse, developers may promote their apps on social media, promising incredible rewards or using deepfakes of celebrities to attract audiences – Bitdefender found a lot of these ads. They will lead to the app’s website or Early Access program page. In some cases, scammers imitate popular apps and offer financial rewards for downloading, such as doubling your investment when completing tasks or completing game stages. Capitalize on the hype surrounding an anticipated game release by posting screenshots of the original game.

When such apps are discovered and removed, they are often replaced by exact copies with the same malicious functionality. Some of them have been downloaded thousands of times and are still available in early access programs on the Play Store. These can be applications that provide useful functionality, such as reading PDF files or scanning QR codes. In some cases, the same app is released by a different developer, potentially broadening its reach and increasing downloads. Bitdefender points out that the reputation of the Google Play Store depends on user trust, but in the early access program, there is almost no chance of identifying malicious apps before installation.
