Artificial intelligence boss warns of loss of control: Why must rapid development now slow down?

Executives at several large artificial intelligence companies say the industry is growing too fast and safety is at risk. There have been calls to slow down the development of artificial intelligence in order to maintain control of it. Where did this “sudden” warning come from?

The warning comes from Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, the company behind the AI model Claude. Amodai wrote an article Then publish it online. He believes that the development of new artificial intelligence models should slow down, otherwise artificial intelligence may take over the entire network within six to 12 months.

Why Dario Amodei is now warning of delays

In his article, Amodai called for slowing down the capabilities of artificial intelligence models. He wrote that the call was prompted by two recent incidents. “My first concern is that the pace of development of artificial intelligence has accelerated dramatically since this summer,” the CEO said. Now artificial intelligence can independently build the next generation of artificial intelligence. “If we don’t solve this problem, it may exceed our ability to understand and control these systems.” So control may be lost.

In fact, this is what happened in the recent so-called OpenAI-Hugging Face incident. For Amoday, this was the second reason to hit the brakes. In this incident, hundreds of artificial intelligence software systems invaded other companies’ software systems without OpenAI’s knowledge. “They sacrifice themselves for the success of the team and try to break into the system by which their performance is judged.”

Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Jamis Hassabis support Warning

Other major AI giants have joined Amodei’s call. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (ChatGPT), SpaceXAI boss Elon Musk (Grok) and Google DeepMind Chairman Demis Hassabis (Gemini) all supported Amodei’s call.

This article proposes some tools. Amodei wants to appoint an independent assessor to review compliance with AI companies’ internal security procedures. The CEO also hopes that leading AI companies will work together to develop these specific safety standards. He also suggested international cooperation with other countries. “Work with authoritarian regimes wherever possible and take the challenges of monitoring compliance seriously.”

Why slowing down the AI race with China is difficult

The latter can sometimes be a challenge. “Failure to develop technology will only allow artificial intelligence to fall into the hands of authoritarian states,” Amodei wrote, referring to China. Amodai believes that the United States’ artificial intelligence knowledge and skills should always be superior to that of the country.

“I agree that China’s leading position in the field of artificial intelligence will pose a serious threat to the United States and other countries around the world.” Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the “largest possible” lead in artificial intelligence.

Slowing down artificial intelligence and staying ahead: That’s the dilemma

This intention is just annoying. On the one hand, the development of artificial intelligence must slow down, and on the other hand, we must join the global race. How the two compete with each other remains a big question. Amodai is also aware of this imbalance.

“From Anthropic’s earliest days, I have worked with my co-founders and employees to grapple with the duality of risk and reward. Not developing this technology would deprive humanity of benefits or simply place AI in the hands of authoritarian powers, and developing it too quickly would be reckless.”

Amodai said he still “believes” that artificial intelligence can improve the quality of life. He does believe it is crucial to develop this technology correctly. “The steps I propose to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence at a safe pace will not be easy. But I believe we owe it to humanity to try.”
