Blizzard officially announced Diablo V at BlizzCon 2026, although Diablo IV is still receiving new content. The fifth installment, expected to be released in spring 2029, will take place hundreds of years after the fourth game – in a world where Sanctuary has fallen to an onslaught of hellish forces and Diablo has emerged victorious.
The protagonist will be the heir to Westmarch and has a mysterious connection to Diablo. Much of the world will consist of procedurally generated combat zones, and the hero’s base will be a gradually expanding caravan camp. Blizzard is promising a record number of classes, but has so far confirmed the Demon Hunter, Monk, and new Plague Knight classes.
The developers will also return to a more traditional Diablo II-style item system: gear will have stat requirements, item size will once again impact inventory, and runes, runewords, and sets will become more important. Diablo himself will play a full role in the story, and starting in 2027, Blizzard plans to regularly showcase the development process and take player feedback into account.
In addition, Blizzard also announced the launch of an animated “Diablo” series for Netflix. A premiere date and other details have yet to be revealed.
