During BlizzCon 2026, a game called StarCraft was announced. This is a new project in a well-known series that has only released RTS strategies before, but is still very popular in various regions. The name choice confused some players, and Blizzard head Joanna Farris had to clarify in an interview Bloomberg.
According to Joanna Faris, Blizzard doesn’t see new games as replacing the classic strategy games in the series. During the interview, Faris was asked why the project is called StarCraft, without a serial number or subtitle, and whether that means Blizzard has no plans to release StarCraft III. The company’s president emphasized that new projects are created taking into account the legacy of the series, rather than starting from scratch:
We firmly believe that this is StarCraft for the modern player without straying too far from our RTS roots. We will tell you more about this in the coming years.
[…] This is an extension of the franchise, not a replacement.
Blizzard’s president also explained the choice of names without numbers. According to her, the company hopes to use the project as a new starting point for the series and to appeal to modern audiences.
We like to put the StarCraft name on it and start a new conversation around the series.
Currently, the Blizzard team has not revealed almost any details about the new StarCraft. The project promises a 2030 release, but a platform list, gameplay details, or other key details have yet to be revealed.
