AMD is reportedly developing neural rendering technology for its next-generation GPUs, including a feature called neural illumination It’s likely to arrive with RDNA 5 and challenge NVIDIA’s approach.

This indiscretion comes from leaker Kepler_L2, who participated in a discussion dedicated to a new generation of graphics technology. AMD is reportedly preparing this feature, called “Neural Lighting” and tied to the RDNA 5 architecture.

AMD relies on neural rendering to enable future graphics

Kepler_L2 explains that neural rendering consists of Technology that replaces traditional shaders with neural networks. When asked about possible exclusivity of RDNA 5, the leaker responded that it was possible given the computational load required for these technologies. Nerve lighting should also not be confused with light regeneration. The latter is described as a noise reduction technique, whereas the new approach is supposed to directly intervene in the generation of lighting.

This direction is consistent with AMD’s expectations for the FSR Diamond, which will be launched in March. The new generation of technology is expected to include neural rendering, machine learning-based upscaling, machine learning-based multi-frame generation, and new ray regeneration aimed at ray tracing and path tracing. AMD also said it has tight integration with Xbox GDK and Project Helix.

Some signals also come from Research published on GPUOpen. On August 20, AMD launched Global illumination model based on neural networkthe ability to reconstruct indirect lighting from off-screen areas using information from the G-buffer and reflection shadow maps. This was followed on September 9th by a study of a single-channel diffusion model, combining lighting, geometry, materials, and data from previous frames.

Kepler_L2 also expressed his own thoughts on how such a system should work, suggesting Directly obtain 3D game datageometry, BVH, radius information, depth and materials. However, this is a personal consideration of its possible functionality and not a description of AMD technology.

So it remains to be seen how AMD will implement these technologies into commercial products. FSR Diamond and Neural Lighting are still under continuous development, and no specific date for their release on consumer GPUs has been announced. Adoption also depends on developer support and the actual availability of the necessary hardware.
