Bethesda Game Studios has unlocked the 70th free content update for online game Fallout 76 on all platforms. An in-game event called “The Slasher” will run for several weeks until December 1, 2026, in which players will hunt down a serial killer impersonator across Appalachia. Meanwhile, developers have released the long-awaited next-gen upgrade for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, which runs the game at native 1440p at 60 FPS and is available as a free upgrade for previous generations.
The new season of content puts dark crime stories at the center of gameplay. The event is based on the legend of the Pocket Killer and sends the residents of Vault to uncover a conspiracy in the wasteland. With this update, Bethesda is using a new campaign format: instead of a static launch model, action unfolds over weeks through unlockable campaigns, clue hunts, and recurring challenges. During their investigations, players will encounter enemy factions, such as the Pocket Phantoms, and unlock themed rewards, including paint jobs and new power armor.
Creative director Jon Rush described the project as an experiment in future Fallout 76 content structure. The combination of weekly actions, scavenger hunts, and environmental details is designed to actively integrate the wasteland itself into the crime story’s narrative. If the community responds positively, the format could serve as a template for future seasonal updates.
While expanding the content, Bethesda also released native versions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, achieving an important technical milestone. After years of backwards compatibility, versions for current-gen consoles now run smoothly at 60 FPS and 1440p standard resolution. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users will also receive graphics and performance optimizations as part of general platform support, while existing accounts can seamlessly switch to the new console version.
Through the dual release of technical upgrades and new event formats, Bethesda emphasized its long-term support for live service games. All players can download the update now through Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra.
