transition StarCraft Going from real-time strategy to open-world shooter has forced Blizzard to solve problems that the developers of classic RTS barely thought of. One of the most unexpected results is a completely ordinary part of the environment – the door.

A new StarCraft game unveiled at BlizzCon 2026, but not another strategy snowstorm The decision was made to completely change the usual formula of the series. The project will take players from the usual top-down perspective directly into a large world, where characters and objects will be perceived from the perspective of someone located within the space.

It is this change in perspective that is at the root of many new challenges. during an interview Tech Radar Game Dan Hay, general manager of StarCraft, said that one of the most important examples is the need to make ordinary doors work with creatures whose size and mass are very different from humans.

“Door” — that’s exactly what Hay said in response to a question about the specific difficulties the team faced.

The problem becomes obvious when you consider the scale of the StarCraft universe. If the character is about three meters tall and carries about 450 kilograms of equipment, what happens at the door? For a top-down strategy game, details like this are almost irrelevant. In shooters, players are literally right next to them and notice any inconsistencies immediately.

According to Hay, developers had to think individually about how the doors should work based on the character’s size and gear to make the world around him look convincing. The team’s main goal is to ensure that players don’t think about such technical limitations at all.

In other words, StarCraft should have a sense of internal logic: whether a normal character or a giant armored warrior walks through the door, the door should open and function equally naturally.

However, the problems associated with the new perspective do not end there. Hay noted that Blizzard had to rethink another fundamental element of the series: scale.

In RTS, players observe the battlefield from above, so huge bases, transports or combat units are primarily seen as elements of the overall composition. In shooters, with the camera right next to them, the same objects start to look completely different.

Anna Lee Hartling, deputy development manager of “StarCraft”, took the military camp as an example to describe this change most vividly. According to her, after watching the new trailer, this is what impressed her the most. The reason was not the design of the building itself, but the opportunity to see it from a complete perspective (not just from above).

Now, players can literally fly around an object and examine it from all sides. Not only can you see the usual roof of the RTS, but you can also see the entire structure, its lower part, the landing mechanism and the jet engines.

This approach revolutionizes our view of the world around us. The player no longer just controls an army on a map – he’s actually inside the space Blizzard has created and treats it as a real place.

Hartling noted that this change in perspective can have a stronger emotional impact. Huge buildings, equipment, and characters begin to be viewed not as abstract game elements, but as truly massive objects that sit directly in front of the player.

That’s why the new StarCraft requires the team to put more effort into the believability of the environment. Every little detail—from doorways to how vehicles land—must fit within the scale of the world and the logic of the universe.

For fans of the series, this means a very unusual result. Blizzard didn’t just take the familiar Terran, Zerg, and Protoss into another genre, it actually created StarCraft from a whole new perspective. What was usually designated as a few pixels on a strategy map should now become a full-fledged part of the three-dimensional world.

The new StarCraft is still in the early stages of development and is expected to be released in 2030. As a result, Blizzard still needs to address a lot of similar issues, but it’s clear that the transition to a shooter has changed virtually everything for the developer – even regular doors.
