As part of its pre-Tokyo Game Show 2026 press conference, Capcom announced new details about the major expansion pack Monster Hunter: Wild Rise. In an extended trailer, the developers confirmed the return of the elder dragon Teostra, which joins dragons like Kushara Daura and the gigantic Laoshan Dragon to expand the monster roster. The add-on’s plot takes a major leap in time, starting several years after the end of the main game’s campaign. In addition to the narrative elements, producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has also introduced tangible quality-of-life optimizations, including faster weapon switching, direct gear adjustments on the item boxes outside the tent, and free visual character adjustments without the need to edit tickets.
The narrative premise of Monster Hunter: Wild Rise is related to the events of the main story, but takes on an independent tone due to the time jump. At the beginning of the expansion, Laolong Laoshanlong suddenly broke into the forbidden area and forced the expeditionary force to retreat. It was only a few years later, after the construction of Mado Fortress, that the Guilds began fighting again.
This time gap is also reflected in the appearance of famous characters: the young companion Nata returns to the expedition as an older, mature hunter. In terms of game mechanics, Teostra, often feared by the community for his devastating supernova explosions, joins the ranks of high-end challenges with the new Master level.
In order to improve the hunting process, Capcom has also made systemic changes. In the future, players will be able to switch weapons more fluidly, and there will no longer be any restrictions on customizing their hunters and followers, as cosmetic modifications can now be made indefinitely without the need to purchase a paid ticket. These handy updates will also be available as free patch updates to the base game at the start of the expansion.
“Monster Hunter Wilds: Rise” is planned to be released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027. The battle against Teostra can be played for the first time as part of an audience demo at the Tokyo Game Show Exhibition Center.
