The Ministry of Digital Development is in formal negotiations with the American company Apple on the possibility of connecting Russian iPhone users to fifth-generation networks. The first 5G networks were launched in the country last week, but initially they will only be available to users of Android-based devices, and how the technology works on Apple smartphones depends entirely on the manufacturer’s stance.
IT expert Vladimir Zykov said that the Cupertino company has not officially included 5G networks in the list of functions supported by Russian telecom operators. To change this situation, successful testing of the operation of mobile devices in domestic infrastructure and the updating of special operator configurations are required. So far, Next Generation Communications has been deployed in 16 Russian cities with 10 million users, and plans are in place to expand coverage to an additional 50 settlements by the end of this year.
