Remedy submitted a new Alan Wake’s Return trademark registration application to EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) on September 15, 2026. The studio already used the title in 2016’s Quantum Break content, but the new entry covers significantly more categories.
In 2016, the registration of Alan Wake Returns sparked speculation about the development of a sequel to the game. Well the reason isn’t just the trademark itself, but the film of the same name that was discovered shortly before Quantum Break was released. Remedy creative director Sam Lake later explained that this was about content within Quantum Break, not a standalone project.
As a result, Alan Wake: Return serves as the cutscene for the first act of Quantum Break. Among them, FBI agents investigate the disappearance of Alan Wake. The author himself, Mr. Scratch and Alex Casey, played by Sam Lake, appear in the film. Lake then emphasized that registration is necessary in order to legally protect content.
A large part of the trademark registration process involves legal issues. You just need to make sure everything is protected.
The new application date is September 15, 2026, including categories 09, 16, 25 and 41. These categories include software and video games, movies and downloadable media content, books and comics, apparel, TV series, film production and other multimedia services.
