A clip from Gabe Newell’s 2013 college lecture went viral, with the head of Valve highlighting a major mistake among video game developers – the tendency to mistake truly exciting and unexpected user behavior for malicious hacking. As a classic example, he cited a historical event in Ultima Online, where the creators decided to roll back the servers after a player named Rainz accidentally killed the character Richard Garriott (Lord Blitish) due to a protection failure.
Newell argued that developers should not eliminate the aftermath of the accident but instead incorporate the daring murder into the project’s official lore and plot, turning technical glitches into memorable events. At the same time, the head of Valve emphasized the importance of stability and security in the digital world, and pointed out that players should be confident in the safety of their savings and the reliability of virtual rules.
