TSMC is accelerating its transition to 1.4nm process technology. Sources revealed that TSMC plans to build four factories in Taiwan. Mass production is expected in 2028, and the first test batches may appear earlier.
Trial production will begin in the third quarter of 2027, and by mid-2028, the total production capacity of the four bases can reach 1.20-160,000 wafers per month. If the plan comes to fruition, TSMC will have one of the largest production bases for sub-2nm technologies.
Meanwhile, the largest customers are already competing for capacity. It is said that with the advancement of artificial intelligence, the demand for cutting-edge chips is increasing, and Apple, AMD, Broadcom and Nvidia are all supporting production. Apple, in particular, is expected to move to 1.4 nm solutions as early as 2028 to deliver necessary sales in advance.
The price looks interesting too. According to recent estimates, a 1.4nm wafer costs about $35,000. Although 2nm wafers are now worth about $33,000, this is significantly lower than the $45,000 previously mentioned. If the calculations are accurate, the gap between generations would be surprisingly small. When these four factories are operating at full capacity, TSMC’s total annual revenue from 1.4nm production could reach $45 billion to $52 billion.
