Video memory manufacturers may shift to producing denser GDDR7 chips within the next two years. Jinzhu Upgrade insiders revealed that 4GB and 6GB chips may appear in 2027 or 2028. Today, most consumer graphics cards use 2GB chips, and somewhere around here you can see a 3GB chip.
Switching to a new chip will allow you to significantly increase the amount of VRAM without expanding the memory bus. For example, four 4 GB dies will provide a graphics card with 16 GB of memory on a 128-bit bus, and eight such dies will provide 32 GB of memory on a 256-bit bus. In the case of the 6 GB die, four dies already provide 24 GB.
Professional accelerators and workstations may be particularly in need of such solutions, as large amounts of memory are important for artificial intelligence and other resource-intensive tasks. In the meantime, the 4 GB chip may attract interest in gaming graphics cards for the masses.
