Age of Empires: Developer World’s Edge cancels new game

A new game from developer World’s Edge has also fallen victim to Microsoft’s restructuring. The studio’s next title (possibly even a new Age of Empires) has reportedly been canceled.

World’s Edge, the development studio owned by Xbox Game Studios, was already working on a new game, but it’s now said to have been canceled in light of Microsoft Group’s recent restructuring measures and layoffs. The developer of the last Age of Empires was also part of Activision and is now part of this division within Microsoft.

Real concrete details about the discontinued project have yet to be officially announced, but there’s still speculation online that it could be a new Age of Empires.

The studio’s former creative director Adam Isgren said they have “some great plans for what’s next.” This was emphasized later by senior software engineer Andrew Martz, who confirmed that the project had been terminated as part of a reorganization under Activision.

It’s unclear if the team has been developing the next Age of Empires. The game will most likely be at least another real-time strategy game, since World’s Edge is basically only known for that type of work.

A wave of layoffs has hit the edges of the world; half the workforce there has reportedly been driven onto the streets.
