Marathon Development Plan Bungie stated that our goal is to transform the game from a “winner-take-all, ruthless PvEvP experience” to one that can welcome a wider audience.
“Some players want a quick, less stressful workout after get off work,” game director Del Chafe III and creative director Julia Nardin wrote in a blog post. “Some want to spend the entire evening with their team. Others want to test builds, compete directly with other users, take on difficult challenges, or follow strange clues deep within the ruins of Tau Ceti IV. Marathon must be able to support them all.”
After Marathon launched the Nightfall update in October, Bungie will continue to plan to launch the Symbiosis update in December. Bungie says Symbiosis represents a “significant step into the future” of Marathon and will include “more ways to play, easier ways to learn the basics of the game, and more opportunities to explore Tau Ceti IV in a low-pressure environment.” Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode It will launch alongside Symbiosis, giving players a space where they can “explore, experiment, and face challenges without fear of being hunted by other runners.”

Symbiosis will launch on December 8 and will also include a competitive team deathmatch mode, an expanded version of the beginner-friendly map Perimeter with a “substantial visual overhaul,” and a new shell, bishopdescribed as a high-performance robot warrior running a marathon. “Bishop is a fast, surgical hunter designed around speed, suddenness, and devastating bursts of melee damage,” Bungie explained. “How this playstyle will fit into your team, and what role Bishop will play in different marathon experiences, we can’t wait for players to discover for themselves.”
Every Welcome new usersBungie is also working on improving Marathon’s onboarding process and giving players a new social space with a built-in shooting range.

- A connected system for permanent PvE, PvP and PvEvP experience

- More focused quest lines and narrative

Bungie says There’s still a lot of work to be done and is committed to continuing to grow the marathon in 2027 and beyond.
