MOBA League of Legends lead game designer Matt Proczon commented on the current state of the competitive mode following discussions with esports player Mike Phantasm. He said character balance was in good shape and overall audience satisfaction remained high, but at the highest skill levels the gameplay started to feel stagnant. Prokzon noted that Riot Games is proceeding cautiously and not planning risky patches until the end of the year, as minor changes will not address diversity issues.
The developers are particularly concerned about issues with the European Ranked Tournaments, where there are not enough spots in major leagues compared to the size of the region, and the Aegis reward system is inefficient and only rewards certain characters. The team intends to make extensive improvements to the top shooting range next season. At the same time, the studio continues to discuss controversial issues such as negative points growth in the league at the top of the standings, triggering heated discussions in the community.
Do you agree with the developers that League of Legends’ current balance needs new ideas for veteran players?
