A federal jury in San Diego found that Apple infringed on two Taction Technology patents covering tactile feedback technology that the plaintiffs claim is used in iPhones and Apple Watches. The jury awarded damages of $5.72 billion. Apple disagrees with the ruling and plans to appeal.

Taction Technology filed a lawsuit against Apple in 2021 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. The company argued in a statement that the iPhone maker acted inappropriately “Leveraging Taction’s Innovation and Success”sells devices using tactile feedback technology developed by Taction. In 2023, Apple successfully dismissed the lawsuit, but the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals later reopened the case.
“We appreciate the jury’s consideration, but we strongly disagree with today’s verdict and award of damages, which are completely unsupported by the facts. Apple’s Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology, as Taction’s own testing of Apple products during the trial confirmed. Apple did not use Taction’s technology, and we will appeal this decision.”Apple said in a statement.
“We are pleased that the jury found in favor of Taction, confirming the company’s patent rights. Taction waited five and a half years to bring this case to court, so this decision has been a long time coming.””, Taction’s lawyers commented on the court’s decision.
