Chris Wilson, one of the creators of Path of Exile, harshly criticized the recent release of Diablo 5 and the simultaneous reduction of full support for Diablo 4. In his video, he noted that Blizzard’s decision to abandon development of the main content of Part 4 in favor of a sequel made it seem like the game was simply “cast aside by fate,” leaving only a small team to support it.
Developers were particularly angry at the announcement of the anniversary event season of hell legacydedicated to the series’ 30th anniversary. According to Wilson, this approach undermines respect for the classics and story:
- The temporary return of Deckard Cain (who died in Diablo III) and the introduction of all that primal evil immediately undercut the logic of the narrative.
- Developers used derogatory nicknames like “Birthday Boy” for the series’ main villain, the Lord of Terror, ruining the dark fantasy atmosphere that players cherished the series for.
However, despite criticism of Blizzard’s current direction, Chris Wilson remains hopeful for Diablo 5. He was impressed by the return to more RNG-style world design, the dark visual style, and even the font choice for the upcoming sequel’s logo.
