Paweł Sasko, senior designer and consultant on the new version of the game, explained this in a recent interview with VGC.
According to Sasko, when disc project When we started assessing which aspects of the game needed improvement, the response was unanimous: “We looked at how The Witcher 3 is doing today, the most common player complaints, and where it’s not mature. The story is still great, and the characters are great, but from a gameplay perspective, it’s clear that it’s pretty much the weakest aspect. Journalists and players alike said the same thing: Gameplay is the weakest part of The Witcher 3”.
An intervention inspired by Cyberpunk 2077 2.0, but with necessary differences

Sasko explained that many of the solutions employed stemmed from experience gained with Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update, which profoundly changed the game’s gameplay. However, the designer clarified that the remastered version won’t have the same impact:
“The comparison to Cyberpunk 2.0 is legitimate, but I don’t think the effect will be that radical. The Witcher 3 is built on a different foundation: Geralt is an ordinary characterwith a clear fighting style”.

It is for this reason that Skill tree revisions must respect structural constraints: “In Cyberpunk, you can create completely different builds, and Geralt is still Geralt. Now you can still build a more diverse Geralt, with more active abilities than before, but we’re still within the confines of the character.”
Sasko revealed that the idea of intervening in the gameplay did not arise in the remake, but can be traced back to the next-generation update released in 2022, when the team began to discuss parts of the game that had become “rusty”. These discussions also led to the new expansion pack “Songs of the Past” developed by Fool’s Theory, expected to be launched in 2027. The expansion pack will launch a new adventure starring The Witcher and will be connected to “The Witcher 4”.
