The remastered version of CD Projekt Red’s open-world action role-playing game “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” released yesterday was supposed to be a free upgrade only for users of the original version, but problems arose on the Nintendo Switch 2.

We remind you that if a Switch 2 owner owns a copy of the Switch game in digital or retail format, they are entitled to a free version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered (the name of the re-release).
As forum user Erik_REF pointed out Redditin theory, the latter feature could translate into unlimited free upgrades for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered on Switch 2.

The fact is that when upgrading the retail version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Switch, users will receive a digital version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered for Switch 2, and the original cartridge is not required to run it.
There is no limit to the number of such free upgrades. Therefore, Switch 2 owners can simply borrow (e.g. from a friend) a The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Switch cartridge to get the new version for free.
Can confirm. It is claimed that after “The Witcher 3 Remastered”, the Switch 1 cartridge is no longer needed.

In comparison, PS5, Xbox Series X and S also offer free upgrades to owners of the retail version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but still require a disc to verify authorization.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered releases on PC on September 29th (steam, GOG, EGS, Battle.net), PS5, Xbox Series X, S and Nintendo Switch 2. The re-release has helped the game set new online peak records on the Valve store.
