Amazon updates Kindle reader with aluminum casing, replaceable battery, wireless page turner

Amazon has launched a new generation of Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft e-readers. The devices come in bright new colors and have plastic bodies with soft-touch coatings. In addition, for the basic version, there is now also available an aluminum casing version with twice the memory capacity – 32 GB. All new models offer user-replaceable battery options to meet EU regulations.

The casings of the Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft models have been made a millimeter thinner. According to the manufacturer, books open 30% faster. Additionally, the power button has been moved from the bottom edge of the case to the right side of the top of the case.

The updated basic Kindle model is now available, starting at $149.99. It comes in a new purple color and a more refined graphite design. The device comes with 16 GB of RAM and displays ads on the lock screen. The new product looks more attractive than its predecessor thanks to a seamless transition from frame to screen – the company ditched the old design with an embedded display.

A key innovation in the range is the option of an aluminum casing: This model costs $189.99, offers twice the memory, and doesn’t display ads. For the aluminum model, the new clamshell case is priced at $49.99, and the device magnetically attaches to the case.

The $199.99 Paperwhite has a higher pixel density screen and automatic brightness control. The aluminum-bodied Paperwhite and Colorsoft models cost $249.99 and $319.99 respectively, which is better than the higher-end versions of the basic Kindle. These are new modifications to the Signature Edition, equipped with a contact pad on the rear panel for attaching a magnetic case with page turning buttons. The case is sold separately for $79.99.

Amazon’s new e-reader models don’t offer wireless charging. For the Signature Edition modification, the manufacturer offers a charging base for $59.99, which allows you to charge the device in a vertical position and connect via the same contacts.

Additionally, Amazon has added the Kindle Click remote to its line of e-reader accessories. This $34.99 Bluetooth remote lets you turn pages and adjust screen brightness. The device is lightweight and comes with a wrist strap. The remote charges via USB Type-C and is compatible with Kindle models released in 2024 or later.
