The EVE Online team has launched one of the most ambitious technical pipelines in the long-running MMORPG history. The game has been running on a custom Python 2 interpreter since its release in 2003 and has now been officially migrated to the modern version of Python 3.12.
The first sign of this plan is a deep revamp of the backend for agent posting tasks. While the developers promise the process will be seamless for the vast majority of players, capsule pilots involved in mission chains (especially scientists working with research agents) are strongly encouraged to visit their old acquaintances and complete at least one mission. This is necessary so that the repository correctly transmits the current progress during subsequent stages of structure updates.
As the project’s authors point out, over two decades the code base has accumulated approximately 2.4 million lines. Switching to Python 3 will free you from the technical limitations of the past, using the latest libraries, improving performance and simplifying text and localization processing.
The process will be long and gradual, but the successful launch of the first test on the Singularity test server marks the beginning of a new era of New Eden’s technology infrastructure.
