AMD is preparing its next generation of processors for portable gaming consoles, and its approach to development is decidedly more serious this time around. According to the latest news from insiders Gotou_3rd and CaptainMcShotgun, the Ryzen Z3 series of chips based on the future Medusa Point mobile architecture will adopt a semi-customized layout created specifically to meet the needs of pocket PCs, rather than just a streamlined design for laptops.

The main changes affected the distribution of the chips: the processor section was slightly reduced to significantly enhance the integrated graphics. The chip includes four efficient Zen 6 cores and two energy-efficient Zen 5 LP cores. Ditching the four “dense” Zen 6c cores makes it possible to place a larger graphics unit on the 12 compute units (CU) of the RDNA4m architecture. The graphics card itself is an upgraded version of RDNA 3.5, with a matrix block of RDNA 4, ensuring hardware support for FSR 4+.

The Ryzen Z3 base version is optimized for a TDP of 15 W, while the Z3 Extreme version targets 25 W power consumption. In addition, the processor is packaged in a compact FF6 enclosure measuring just 25x25mm, which will greatly simplify the cooling and layout of the motherboard inside the laptop.
