Aniplex held a demo and Q&A session for Fate/EXTRA Record at Tokyo Game Show 2026. The game is a full remake of the 2010 PSP classic “Fate/EXTRA”. The developers completely redesigned the graphics and systems, transforming the project into a modern JRPG while retaining the original script and key dialogue.

The story begins when the protagonist’s peaceful school life collapses as he loses his memory and finds himself embroiled in a lunar war for the Holy Grail. Players sign a contract with one of three servants (saber, archer, or spellcaster), each of whom offers a different fighting style. Characters are reproduced in 3D based on illustrations by original designer Arco Wada, and dialogue is fully voiced. Scenes use Spine animation and different text formats – from classic sprites with windows to full-screen visual novel style. The choice of lines will affect the Servant’s reaction and the development of the relationship.

Arena exploration now takes seven game days per round. Players collect special keys, upgrade their characters, search for enemy information, and fight ordinary enemies as well as the gatekeepers at the end of each level. Defeating bosses will bring you new cards with command spells. Encounters with enemy followers are limited to three turns and require completing specific tasks, such as dealing a certain amount of damage or surviving.

The combat system in the game has been completely changed. Instead of the old “rock, paper, scissors” scheme, it uses decks of cards to structure turn-based combat. Each turn, players select command cards based on action point limits. There is attack, and there is defense with limited durability and skills. Three cards with chain marks in a row will activate a powerful extra attack without spending points.

There are also non-combat mechanics in the arena – object puzzles, dodging enemy master attacks, and servant time events. In it you can talk to the servant, learn more about him and increase his attributes. Aniplex separately explained that the change of developer to Meteorise did not change the original concept of the project. Future plans for the Fate/EXTRA series have yet to be determined.
