Jagex has officially announced the start of development on a new MMORPG set in the RuneScape universe. The project, currently tentatively titled RS4, is being created on Unreal Engine. The new product will be a standalone game, existing alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and RuneScape Dragonwilds. Since development is still in the early stages, it won’t be released anytime soon.
Jagex talked about the new game during the RuneFest 2026 festival, which commemorates RuneScape’s 25th anniversary. The company explained the early announcement as wanting to involve players in development before launch. The developers plan to collect community feedback, conduct testing, and make adjustments as the project develops.
The name of the RS4 has not been finalized yet. This is what the developers are calling RuneScape, the fourth generation MMO project. Jagex promises to reveal more details about the game’s title and structure next year.
The development of the new MMORPG will take into account the creative experience of RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, as well as the recent RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The core of this program remains the continuous development of character and the maintenance of progress. The author emphasizes that RS4 will not replace the existing games in the series, but will only become another way to explore the world of Gielinor.

The story of RS4 takes place in the Sixth Age. The starting area will be Ashenfall, which players recently began exploring in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The territory is located northeast of the rest of Girino. The new game will take place several years after the events of Dragonwild and the destruction of Dragon Queen Kudra.
Ashenfall is just the first part of future adventures, so we can look forward to new areas in the future. In the future, the developers hope to expand the game world, returning to locations already familiar to RuneScape fans, and creating new areas and storylines throughout Gielinor.
As of now, Jagex has not revealed the platform, release model, combat system features, skills, or exact release date. Developers warn that the release of a new MMORPG is still several years away, so fans of the genre will have to be patient.
