Meta announced that in the coming months, users will see tags on content generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
Meta announced that it is collaborating with industry partners on common technical standards for identifying AI content, including video and audio.
“As the distinction between human and synthetic content blurs, people want to know where the line is,” says Meta. “It’s important that we help people know when the photorealistic content they’re seeing has been created using artificial intelligence.”
Images generated using Meta’s AI image generator are labeled “Imagined with AI” along with invisible watermarks and metadata embedded in the images. But Meta has now also announced AI tagging on all content created with Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney and Shutterstock.
“Being able to detect these signals will allow us to flag AI-generated images that users post on Facebook, Instagram and Threads,” says Meta.
The company announced a feature that will allow people to detect when they’re sharing AI-generated video or audio so Meta can add a tag.
“We will require people to use this detection and flagging tool when they post organic content with photorealistic video or realistic audio that has been digitally created or altered, and we may apply penalties if they don’t,” says Meta.
In cases where there is a significant risk of misleading the public, more prominent labeling will be applied, providing users with additional information and context for digitally manipulated images, video or audio recordings.
While Meta acknowledges that it is not yet possible to identify all AI-generated content, the company is working on solutions available with current technology.
“We are working on developing classifiers that can help us automatically detect AI-generated content, even if invisible markers are missing. At the same time, we are looking for ways to make it harder to remove or modify invisible watermarks,” the company said.
