Microsoft is preparing its own AI-powered upscaling feature for PC games in Windows 11, similar to DLSS. Social network user X PhantomOcean3 discovered this feature in the latest test versions of the operating system. Microsoft describes automatic resolution upscaling as a way to “use AI to make supported games play more smoothly and with improved detail.”
This is very similar to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology, which uses AI to improve the quality of games, improve frame rates and image quality, The Verge reports. AMD and Intel also offer their own options – FSR and XeSS.
Microsoft hasn’t officially announced this new resolution upscaling feature yet, and it’s unclear exactly how it will work or whether it will require any special hardware. Nvidia’s DLSS uses Tensor Cores, which are installed on RTX graphics cards, while AMD’s FSR and Intel’s XeSS run on their own hardware.
Microsoft is also working on an improved color management feature for Windows 11, which should benefit the latest OLED monitors that use HDR. Windows has lacked good OS-level color management for years, forcing users to add their own color profiles in a dialog box that looks like Windows 95.
With today’s Windows Insiders build for Canary and Dev (Build 26052), users will be able to see the new Color Management settings page located under Settings > System > Display > Color management. With future changes, color management will be integrated into the main display settings area of Windows 11, allowing PC users to set color profiles for sRGB and DCI-P3.
