Mattel’s in-development Masters of the Universe reboot appears to be gaining momentum, with sources telling Deadline that Travis Knight (Bumblebee) is in final talks to direct. Insiders claim that the deal is not yet finalized and that other elements of the project are still being finalized, but all signs point to Knight being the top choice.
Chris Butler will rewrite the script from an original draft written by Dave Callaham with Aaron and Adam Nee. Amazon MGM is in final negotiations for the rights to the project, with Mattel’s Robbie Brenner and Escape Artists’ Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal producing.
The film is based on the popular 1980s animated series, and in this version the events unfold around 9-year-old Prince Adam, who crashes on a spaceship and loses his Magic Sword – his only connection to his home on Eternia. Finding him almost two decades later, Adam is sent back into space to protect his home planet from the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first have to uncover the secrets of his past and become He-Man – the most powerful man in the Universe.
