Microsoft is promising to announce some new Xbox hardware this year, as Sarah Bond announced during a podcast on changing Microsoft Gaming’s business strategy. At the moment, it is unknown what exactly this device will be, but in the transition to the next generation, the American corporation is talking about some kind of revolutionary leap for the console gaming industry.
Rumors surfaced that Microsoft had plans to release a more powerful version of the Xbox Series S gaming console, which appears to have ultimately been cancelled. The host of the RedGamingTech podcast spoke about this, citing his sources. According to him, the improved version of Xbox Series S should have included:
Improved RDNA 3 based GPU. Overall improvements to console performance, including more RAM. Some machine learning features designed for improved upscaling performance.
According to him, the Xbox team ended this project quite early, at a stage when even the system’s APU had not yet been fully developed. He notes that there were several reasons for this: the presence on the market of 4 SKU options for releasing games (according to him, a similar update was planned for the Xbox Series X, but it was canceled even earlier) and difficulties with marketing. As RedGamingTech says, it would be difficult for Microsoft to position a gaming console that is slightly more powerful than the Xbox Series S, but weaker than the Xbox Series X.
