The AMD Ryzen 8040 (Hawk Point) processor line is not much different from the Ryzen 7040 (Phoenix). They offer the same number of Zen 4 cores at the same frequencies, and the only innovation that AMD talked about during the announcement was a more powerful unit to speed up machine learning operations. But as it turned out, Hawk Point chips have improvements in terms of energy efficiency that AMD did not mention.
AMD Ryzen 8040 (Hawk Point) processors provide additional optimizations when working with low TDP levels. This is true, for example, for portable gaming systems. As the first tests show, in 10-watt mode the Ryzen 7 8840U, which “on paper” looks almost like a complete copy of the Ryzen 7 7840U, outperforms not only its predecessor in games, but also the AMD Van Gogh single-chip system as part of the Steam Deck.
The difference in performance is small, but still there. More detailed information about the features of the Ryzen 8040 (Hawk Point) chips will appear in the near future with the release of reviews of devices based on them. They can be found, for example, in laptops, mini-PCs and portable gaming systems.
