In just over a month, players will once again be able to play as an insurgent and return to battle in the world of Dragon’s Dogma. More than 10 years after a first opus that was a little shaky, but full of qualities and good ideas, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will have the difficult task of being a new success for Capcom.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 isn’t so much a sequel as a sort of culmination of Capcom and Ideaki Itsuno’s initial vision. In 2012, the first game offered a vast action-RPG, in which the character was accompanied by several characters managed by AI, the famous pawns. Each player created one, and the latter learned almost alone through the adventures. Being two wasn’t enough, we could send the pawns to other players and get some back. In doing so, we had a team with unique characteristics, ready to take down creatures and other threats.
However, Dragon’s Dogma was perhaps too far ahead of its time and, above all, too ambitious. The world was too big, the interface too rigid, and the pawn AI could really drive you crazy. Problems partially corrected on the improved version Dark Arisen, but we felt that we had to go further, or wait for a sufficient technological level. After taking care of Devil May Cry 5, Ideaki Itsuno embarked on this vast project to create Dragon’s Dogma 2. More dynamic, larger, more beautiful with more classes, dozens of monsters and an extremely powerful pawn system. developed, Capcom intends to make the title, expected for March 22, a real successs.
Unlimited framerate on consoles? Hideaki Itsuno leaves doubts lingering
It is therefore a scent of soft reboot that floats in the air, especially since the story will take place in a parallel world where, again, the player’s heart was stolen by a dragon. A solo game, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will highlight a cooperative dimension by promoting the exchange of pawns between players. Expected on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series, the Capcom title will not have no limit in terms of frame rate and will support VFR on PCa technology allowing the framerate to be adjusted to the situation.
Where things get a little carried away is that under the tweet confirming the fact that the FPS number will not be locked, un player asked a question liked by Hideaki Itsuno himself. The latter asked if the absence of limits in terms of images per second and VFR also concerned consoles. For the moment, Capcom has not announced anything, but it is rare for the director of a game to like a message of this kind for no reason. It could therefore be that Dragon’s Dogma 2 also has no limits in terms of fps on console.
The idea raises questions because the limitation to 30 or 60 images per second is not there for nothing. Generally, it allows games running on standard console-level hardware to operate stably and avoid major performance issues. Digital Foundry notes that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is very unstable, and that the presence of modes dedicated to performance would not be a bad thing in itself.
