How much graphics memory do you need for PC games in 2024? We can't answer this question at the moment because the next graphics giants are still on the roadmap. And only when Unreal Engine 5 games with intensive use of Lumen or Nanite appear can serious statements be made on the subject. But it can already be said how prepared PCGH users are for this.
Clear winner in the current survey
There is currently a survey running in the PCGH Extreme forum that could use a few more participants. However, certain tendencies can already be seen, but this is only a snapshot. By far the largest group, a third of all participants, has 24 GiB in their PC – mind you as graphics memory, not as RAM. This is due to a high proportion of survey participants using RTX 4090 cards, but the RX 7900 XTX is of course also included. There are no other graphics cards with this much memory in the desktop market.
Almost logically, the group with 16 GiB is in position 2 – 24 percent, to be precise. Many current cards rely on this amount of graphics memory, including the 4080 / 4080 Super, the 4070 Ti Super or the 4060 Ti 16GB; AMD has a few more, including the RX 7900 GRE, 7800 XT, 7600 XT or the RX 6800 up to 6950 XT. The following two categories are almost equally strong, including the 8 GB and 12 GB fractions. Here it is another 15 or 16 percent. All other graphics memory sizes can be described as exotic.
